Autism Lancet Retraction

The conflict in the MMR: Do you know the facts?

There is much controversy at the time in relation to MMR, specifically the part of measles it. Many parents are nervous about allowing their children to have MMR vaccine mainly, I believe, to its link with autism.

Most people have a very fixed opinion that I have encountered, although it is certain that the current evidence is that they are believers. There is no shortage of information about MMR and autism and is easy to find online. However, it appears that there is a lot of junk available scientific and scientifically untrained may not be able to separate the trash of the real thing. Therefore tend to believe what affects them most.

The whole debate started in 1998, when gastroenterologist Andrew Wakefield, in association with others, stated that MMR might trigger autism. Based on only 12 children, most other than the author of the paper later retracted the results. It was based on the possibility that the measles virus, and to live as part of the vaccine, which enterocolitis (Inflammation of the intestine) and the release of toxins that attack the brain, causing autism.

Parents panicked, decreased immunization rates Wakefield drastically, citing data from California, which showed that the number of cases of autism increased 600% between 1980 and 1994. However, it also supports other evidence that autism rates are increasing: In fact they were increasing before the introduction of MMR vaccine in 1988. During the period in which the proportion of the MMR vaccine to autism was fairly stable, increased even more, and continued to grow when the MMR vaccine uptake in the UK was reduced to 60%. This is poor evidence to suggest a link.

What studies in autism have failed to take into account are:

* They are based on the numbers and do not take population growth or changes in composition into account.

* Cases in the original study refers to the researchers, and there were only 12 of them, and do not represent the population.

* The diagnostic definitions of autism have changed over the years, and several studies have not taken into account. Minor symptoms have been increasingly diagnosed as autism.

* Children are being diagnosed in a younger age and so the cases should be increased.

* Has not been taken into account the increase of environmental pollution by chemicals and fumes.

A large study in Finland involving 1.8 million people who received 3 million doses of MMR vaccine for over 14 years, shows that only a few reactions. He could not, however, take into account the background of autism is normally expected in the general population. However, a good demonstration of that the link is tenuous at best.

A recent analysis in the United Kingdom with this approach, with a growing percentage of autism against a takeover constant of the MMR vaccine. So autism is increasing despite MMR remains stable.

A study in Denmark, often quoted, showed an increase in autism in children who had the MMR vaccine. However, this has been used both by governments and others to refute or prove the link. Not I have seen the evidence, but must be defective if it can be used by both sides.

A recent study in Japan, which withdrew the MMR vaccine for other reasons in 1993 showed that more than 31,000 children born in one district of Yokohama between 1988 to 1996, cases of children diagnosed as autistic at the age of seven continued 48-86 increased by 10,000 of MMR before the withdrawal of 97-161 per 10,000 after the withdrawal. This equates to:

* A 56% increase in autism before removal of MMR vaccine

* A 60% increase in autism after the withdrawal of MMR vaccine

Remember, all children in the test were examined Yokohama to 7 years old, so age was not a factor.

This is the first study in what happens after the MMR vaccine is withdrawn and suggests that the rate of autism and the vaccine are not connected.

The Lancet has recently admitted that the original work of Wakefield never have been published had known certain facts. It has been claimed by Channel 4 and Sunday Times investigation that Andrew Wakefield was being paid to carry out further studies a group involved in a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the manufacturers of the MMR vaccine. Wakefield was supporting this claim behind the scenes.

The research also argues that there was a series of patents from him and the London Free Hospital involved individual treatment, which depended on the reputation of MMR damage and parents who choose per person vaccines. It has also been a study lab unreported Wakefield, who demonstrated his theories to be wrong. The original study seems fatally damaged by these revelations, and Dr. Wakefield has not yet taken the step to try to sue Brian Deer who carried out the investigation.

The main problem with the vaccine MMR appears to be the measles. If this is the case, why should a single measles vaccine be any better than the rate of maternal mortality? This itself has not been explained well, and Wakefield vaccine patents suggest something funny was going on.

There are two areas, and between bit. Parents are caught between the two sets of information. Unfortunately, there are a lot of politics involved in both fields. Supporters of the connection is talking about litigation and class action and anti-sense camp, of course, be defended against this and governments are more concerned. The real scientists are concerned that we may return to the pre-1960 the situation before any measles vaccine was available, and millions died because of disease each year.

The potential legal situation is starting to affect the figures. Review case records have shown that given the history of child by some parents changed after the publicity. Before the publicity that some parents reported they were concerned about their children from an early age, usually before of up to one year. The current history of these children are already showing symptoms of the same children who only occur after MMR vaccination. It is certain to damage to future studies that are now being accused by both sides to be slanted or biased one way or another, depending on which side of the dispute are possible.

= = = THE FUTURE = =

There is currently much media interest and bias that now seems to have tainted the initial study will be the main topic of discussion, rather than whether or not there is actually a link, and this is potentially harmful to children. Children are being damaged: they are either by giving a vaccine that promotes autism or are being denied a vaccine to prevent three serious diseases

It is very important that the truth comes out, if There are financial implications or not. Both parties are obliged to meet to reach a conclusion that helps parents, not lawyers or firms or governments.

In UK only uptake of MMR vaccine has dramatically decreased and the children have begun to die back by measles. Once the young people today grow will almost certainly have problems with abnormalities in the fetus, unless you make sure that they are immune to rubella before puberty. This is especially true now, with so many teenage pregnancies. The problem is that parents today have never seen the era before vaccination, when deaths from measles were common, when child was abnormal common and young men feared of mumps.

Any parent who refuse the MMR vaccination should ensure that your child is immunized against these diseases with separate vaccines. They should not send their children to matches against measles. Mumps and German measles (rubella) the parties are well as these diseases are not dangerous until puberty. Measles on the other is a fatal disease, especially dangerous in young children. Of the 400,000 deaths from measles worldwide, 25% are under 1 year. Almost 80% of measles deaths from pneumonia are: Measles is a respiratory illness.

My own belief is that the MMR vaccine is not a specific problem. If there is a problem found in the measles virus itself, and that is what is claimed by Dr Wakefield for the enterocolitis. The only measles vaccine therefore have the same problem. In my opinion, the choice is not between the MMR vaccine and the vaccine alone, but between any vaccine and autism posssible, or no vaccine and measles and possible death (and autism), not to mention all the nasty side effects such as hearing loss, meningitis and brain damage.

So what is your opinion? Do you believe that MMR causes autism? Would you let your child have the MMR vaccine when the time (13 to 15 months in general)?
